Ashley Landis/Pool Photo-USA TODAY Sports Pelicans vs. Magic Preview: How to watch, live stream, odds, and more Who: New Orleans Pelicans vs. Orlando Magic When: Thursday, Aug. 13, 9:00 ET How to watch: Fox Sports New Orleans, TNT Odds: Pelicans +4, o/u The New Orleans Pelicans season will come to a far less exciting conclusion than many expected on Thursday night. A Pelicans season that, at one point, seemed destined to include an exciting postseason will now end with a sputter inside the bubble. With the team eliminated from the playoffs and tanking not an option, the Pelicans are stuck in a situation that results in them sitting their best players stumbling their way to the finale. The Magic’s situation is only marginally better. While Orlando is guaranteed the No. 8 seed in the playoffs, that will pit them against the league-best Bucks in round one. On top of that, Orlando is without Aaron Gordon, Evan Fournier, Terrence Ross and Michael Carter-Williams on Thursday. The result is a completely meaningless match-up largely between seldom-used players on both rosters. The one intriguing match-up could be between Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball, the top two picks in the 2017 NBA Draft. Neither has had the career most expected them to have but each has found success this season in different ways.
Who's PlayingNew Orleans @ OrlandoCurrent Records: New Orleans 25-33; Orlando 18-40What to KnowThe New Orleans Pelicans are 2-9 against the Orlando Magic since November of 2015, but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit Thursday. New Orleans will square off against Orlando on the road at 7 ET at Amway Center. The Pelicans are hoping to patch up the holes in a defense that has allowed an average of points per contest. New Orleans was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Tuesday as they fell 134-129 to the Brooklyn Nets. New Orleans' defeat came about despite a quality game from power forward Zion Williamson, who had 33 points in addition to seven boards. Meanwhile, Orlando ended up a good deal behind the Atlanta Hawks when they played on Tuesday, losing 112-96. Point guard Cole Anthony (17 points) and center Wendell Carter Jr. (17 points) were the top scorers for Orlando. The Pelicans are the favorite in this one, with an expected margin of victory. They have failed bettors playing the spread in their past four games, so buyers beware. With both teams hitting sour notes in their previous games, they will no doubt be looking to produce a better outcome in this one. Check back to see which squad is able to work their way into the win column. Through 3 QuartersThe New Orleans Pelicans are just one quarter away from delivering their fans the win they've been expecting. Neither team has the game in the bag, but the Pelicans lead 83-78 over the Orlando Magic. New Orleans has been riding high on the performance of small forward Brandon Ingram, who has 29 points and four assists in addition to six boards. One thing to keep an eye out for is Jaxson Hayes' foul situation as he currently sits at five. Orlando has been relying on small forward Franz Wagner, who has 20 points along with five rebounds and two blocks, and point guard Cole Anthony, who has posted a double-double on 14 points and ten dimes along with five boards. Who's PlayingNew Orleans @ OrlandoCurrent Records: New Orleans 11-21; Orlando 7-25What to KnowThe Orlando Magic are getting right back to it as they host the New Orleans Pelicans at 7 ET Dec. 23 at Amway Center. Both teams seek to continue their momentum from their previous wins. The Magic were expected to lose against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday, but instead they received a nice stocking stuffer. Orlando snuck past Atlanta with a 104-98 win. Orlando's shooting guard Gary Harris filled up the stat sheet, picking up 17 points. Meanwhile, the stars were brightly shining for New Orleans in a 111-97 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday. Small forward Brandon Ingram (28 points) and shooting guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker (27 points) were the top scorers for New Orleans. Alexander-Walker hadn't helped his team much against the Milwaukee Bucks last Friday, so this was a nice turnaround for him. The Magic are expected to lose this next one by At 3-9 against the spread at home, they are no cash cow. That said, the Pelicans aren't so hot on the road, where they are 5-12. Orlando was pulverized by New Orleans 135-100 when the two teams previously met in April. Can Orlando avenge their defeat, or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll soon find out.
